Every SEO wants backlinks. But most backlinks are worth nothing — or actively harmful. Here's how to earn real ones.
Guest posting — done properly
Not mass-emailing 100 sites with the same generic pitch. Instead: find sites in YOUR niche that accept contributors, pitch a specific useful topic they haven't covered, write 1,500+ words of genuine value, and include ONE contextual link to your site in the body.
Relationship building
- Comment thoughtfully on other blogs (real comments, not spam)
- Share and cite others' work
- Reach out with no ask — just value
- When you do pitch, they'll remember you
Create link-worthy content
Content that earns links organically includes original research and data, comprehensive guides (like this one), free tools and calculators, templates others want to use, and roundup posts featuring others (they share them).
Digital PR
- Get featured in industry publications
- Contribute expert quotes to journalists (HARO, Qwoted, SourceBottle)
- Get mentioned in roundups and "best of" lists
Monitor your mentions
Set up Google Alerts for your brand name. Reach out to unlinked mentions — most will add a link if asked politely.
What to avoid
- Buying links (against Google policy, can get you banned)
- Link exchanges ("link to me, I'll link to you")
- PBNs (Private Blog Networks) — spammy, often penalized
- Automated link building tools that post comments
- Any site promising "500 backlinks for $50" — 99% spam
How to measure success
- Track referring domains (not total links)
- Monitor domain authority trends
- Watch referral traffic in analytics
- Check for toxic link warnings in Search Console
Consistency beats intensity. 5 quality links per month beats 50 spammy links in one burst.
